Information for Parents

Daytona State College values the involvement of parents in support of their child’s educational goals. We hope the information on this page will assist parents to understand how they can best support their children. In addition, we have included some important resources for parents to understand their role and the responsibility of the College to each student.

Residency for Tuition Purposes

Florida residency for tuition purposes is determined based upon a claimant. A claimant is a person who provides necessary documentation to establish residency for tuition purposes. Students who are under 24 years of age are required, by Florida law, to use a parent or legal guardian as their claimant. As a result, the parent or legal guardian is asked to provide documents such as a Florida driver’s license, voter, and vehicle registration to support the student’s claim to the Florida resident tuition rate.

It should be noted that reporting this information does not financially obligate, in any way, the parent or legal guardian for the student’s educational expenses.

Detailed information and possible exceptions can be found on our Residency page.

Privacy and Student Records

College staff and faculty are bound by federal law to protect the privacy and security of student records. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) defines, among other things, a school’s responsibility to keep all non-directory student information confidential. FERPA applies to all postsecondary students, even if they are under 18. It also applies to all Adult Education students who are 18 years of age or older.

For more information and procedures for requesting access to your son or daughter’s records, please view our catalog.
